The word karma has become common knowledge. Sometimes you see bumper stickers with texts such as: mhis karma rode over your dogma or it's a thankless job, but I have a lot of karma to work out. But not everyone understands what karma really means; why it is important and how to deal with it.
Think about the talents you were born with and the good things that have happened to you in your life. And then now think about the so-called limitations and challenges you have encountered on your life path. Both have to do with your karma. Karma simply tells us that what happens to us in the present is the result of causes we set in motion ourselves in the past - whether ten minutes or ten lifetimes ago. We all grew up learning karmic lessons.
We just didn't call them that. Instead, we heard say: what goes around comes around.What a man sows, he will also reap. Any action has its response. Ultimately, the love you receive equals the love you sent out.In essence, karma tells us that exactly what we do will return to us - someday, somewhere.
Karma and reincarnation go hand in hand. While karma means responsibility and repayment, reincarnation is just another word for opportunity. Reincarnation gives us another chance to pay off the karmic debt we owe to others and to reap the blessings we have distributed. Karma and reincarnation also help us get meaningful answers to life's questions.
Why me? Why not me? Why was my niece born with Down syndrome and her brothers and sisters are healthy and strong? Why do all my relationships end in arguments - how come I can't be with him, nor without him? Why did I survive the car accident, while all my friends died in the car?
Life is full of contradictions and questions like these. Like a koan in Zen Buddhism, each paradox is meant to make us dig deeper, connect us to the inner knowledge of our soul and solve the karmic riddle.
