Five Dhyani Buddhas

Tibetan Buddhists believe that the Adi Buddha, the oldest and highest being, created the Dhyani Buddhas through his meditative powers. The five Dhyani Buddha's are heavenly Buddhas that we visualize during meditation. The word Dhyani is derived from the Sanskrit dhyana, which means "meditation." The Dhyani Buddha are also called Jinas ("Overcomers").

They are not historical figures, like Gautama Buddha, but transcendent beings who symbolize universal divine principles or powers. The Dhyani Buddhas represent various aspects of enlightened consciousness and are great healers of the mind and soul. They are our guides for spiritual transformation.

Traditionally, each Dhyani Buddha is associated with certain attributes and symbols. Each embodies one of the five wisdoms, which are antithetical to the five deadly poisons that are the ultimate danger to man's spiritual progress and hold him to worldly existence. Buddhists teach that the Dhyani Buddhas are able to transmute the five poisons into their transcendent wisdom. The Tibetan Book of the Dead recommends devotional meditation on the Dhyani Buddhas so that their wisdom will replace the negative forces.

Each Buddha governs one of the directions of the universe and one of the cosmic realms of ether, air, water, earth and fire. The Dhyani Buddhas also personify the five skandhas, components that make up cosmic existence and human personality. These components are consciousness, form, feeling, perception and fullness.

In addition, each Dhyani Buddha is associated with a specific color, mudra (hand gesture), symbolic animal supporting his throne, sacred symbol and bija (a metaphor for the origin and cause of things, both in Hinduism and Buddhism).

The bija represents the essence of the Dhyani Buddha. You can use it with the sacred syllable Om (or Aum) and the Buddha's name to make a mantra. A mantra is defined as a series of mystical syllables that have esoteric meaning. In Hinduism and Buddhism, disciples utter mantras to invoke the power and presence of a divine being. In some traditions, devotees use mantras in meditation to help them become one with the deity they invoke.

"By repeating the mantra and adopting the mudra of each Buddha," writes Buddhist monk and teacher Sangharakshita, "one can not only come into alignment with the specific ordering of reality he personifies but also transcendental powers can be administered. "
