The air element The next group of nature spirits is the sylphs, and they take care of the air element, controlling air currents and atmospheric conditions. They purify the atmosphere and provide every cell of life with the sacred breath of Spirit. They are the carriers of prana, or the breath of life, which nourishes all life. At subtle levels, the sylphs transmit the currents of Spirit from the heavens to the earth's atmosphere. The sylphs often have thin, ethereal bodies, which gracefully transform into myriad forms as they float through the air. Like giant transformers, the sylphs conduct currents from the spirit of God, to the spirit of man. They also work to cleanse the air of pollutants - everything from exhaust fumes and volatile organic compounds to toxic gases emitted by factories and other industrial processes - before they can pollute the water and earth. The air element corresponds to the mental plane of existence, or mind, which is similar to air in that its capacity is unlimited. So the sylphs also have the job of purifying the mental realm, which can be polluted by negative thoughts that provide nourishment for hatred, anger, racial prejudice, religious intolerance, resentment, pride, ambition, greed, jealousy and more such toxins.

When I was young, my life was like a fairy tale. I could see the elves and other nature creatures, and I thought everyone saw them. I often visited my grandmother, who lived in the countryside, where there were no street lights. At night I watched the fairies flying around with the fireflies. I sang to them. They love to sing!
