Part 1 of a 4-part weekly series on reincarnation.
As you know, the principle of reincarnation is important in Buddhism. Gautama taught, "What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, while our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow." [Juan Mascaro, transcr. The Dhammapada: The Path of Perfection (London: Penguin Books, 1973), pg.35].
But one fact that you may have overlooked is that the principle of reincarnation was already taught by the Master Jesus. Reincarnation gives us the opportunity to fully realize the kingdom of God, that is, the divine consciousness in our inner being. For the law of reincarnation states that your soul must reincarnate again and again until you attain immortal life through union with God.
Because of the deep respect I had for my fine mother, for many years I could not bring myself to believe in reincarnation. I would not have believed in it, even if I had died and come back as a baby, and then remembered that I had also lived before. I would surely have believed that this was Satan's doctrine because my mother had taught me so.
But reincarnation was not and is not the doctrine of Satan. It is the doctrine of divine justice. It is God's way of making life opportunities equal for everyone. The doctrine of reincarnation was part of the faith of some Christians in the early days of the Church. It was taught publicly by St. Francis. Yet it is still not part of Christian doctrine.
