Karma is the law of cause and effect

Karma is the law of cause and effect - as we sow, so shall we reap. Our thoughts, feelings, words and actions send ripples into the world. We affect the world, just as the world affects us. All life is energy, and energy is neither created nor destroyed. What we send out to others returns to us after it has accumulated more of the same.

When we emit positive thoughts, feelings, actions and words, the same comes back to us. When we participate in unkind or harmful behavior, that negative energy returns to us to be settled. It can create a debt that arises toward a person who was on the receiving end of our abusive energy. If we are smart, we ask for forgiveness and right the wrong done. But if the harmful act is not settled by loving deeds and service to life, we may owe a karmic debt to a person, or life itself, that must be repaid, and possibly in a future life.

In the New Testament we read, 'God is not mocked. Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.' This means that we cannot ignore God's law of karma or think that it does not apply to us. As a cosmic law, what we send out must eventually return. If at the end of our human life we are left with karmic debts that have yet to be paid, God, in his mercy, gives us the opportunity to return and make everything right. Reincarnation is a wonderful opportunity. It is also a mercy solution compared to the view that we go to heaven or hell after this life.

Realistically, most of us are probably not ready for either option. Instead, we have the opportunity to come back to complete our mission here on earth. And this is what we would most like to do. Jesus had that great desire. He said, "I must do the work of him who sent me," and "The Father works until here and I work.

We have also come to do our Father's work, and we have a great desire to fulfill our own divine plan. Today, many people have an inner understanding of karma. Beyond karma is dharma - the soul's ardent destiny, the desire to fulfill our reason for existence. Every soul prepared for rebirth is filled with the realization that the unfinished business must be completed. We want to give something of ourselves to the world. It may be a creative gift or a gift of love, amiability and kindness. It may be a small act of charity or a colossal achievement. The gift each of us will place on the altar of life will vary in accordance with our divine plan.
